Helman Analytics

Udi Helman, PhD is a consultant on renewable energy and storage technologies. He previously chaired the Market Analytics Working Group of the Electricity Storage Association (ESA) and continues to co-chair the analysis working group of the Energy Storage Integration Council (ESIC).  He recently worked with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) on their StorageVET modeling tool (www.storagevet.com), including developing documentation for that project, which is publicly available.  Among many other publications, he co-authored a paper on Operational Benefits of Meeting California’s Energy Storage Targets (NREL Technical Paper NREL/TP-5400-65061, December 2015).  He was previously Managing Director, Economic and Pricing Analysis at BrightSource Energy (2011-2013), where he focused on valuation of concentrating solar power with integrated thermal energy storage, and also wrote a white paper which summarized research and was used in commercial negotiations (the paper is publicly available).  Before that, he was a Principal focused on market design and policy analysis at the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) (2007-2010).  He also worked for almost 10 years on wholesale market design at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in Washington, D.C (1997-2007).  His PhD is in applied economics and systems analysis from The Johns Hopkins University.  He is based in San Francisco and can be reached at Udi@HelmanAnalytics.com.  See also profile on LinkedIn.
