Employed at Duke Energy for over 20 years in a variety of roles including Customer Operations, Energy Efficiency and the Emerging Technology Office. 
 
Currently leading projects within the Emerging Technology Office in following technology areas : Microgrids,  Energy Storage and Distributed Energy Resources, Distributed Generation Control Algorithm Development, and DC Bus Integration of DER’s. 
 
Recent projects include:
  • McAlpine Microgrid in South Charlotte. The microgrid is located on the Distribution Circuit (utility side of the meter) and provides backup generation for the City of Charlotte, Fire Station #24. Tom was awarded the James B Duke Award (highest employee honor in Duke Energy) for the  project.
  • Energy Storage and Smart Inverter Control Algorithm Development to allow simultaneous operation and optimization of Solar, Energy Storage, Smart Inverters and Distribution Circuit equipment for circuits with a high penetration of solar energy.
